assignment for my Western Civilization class. we could write a paper (nay) or we could do an illustration project (yay) with historical relevance. i chose to make army propaganda/recruitment posters based on various great armies in history. this was the one i liked best out of the 3 i did, probably because i spent the most time on it :D

giving up the gun

one of my teachers recently told me that i should never draw for fun.
i'm going to have to respectfully disagree there, because it's the fun that drawing and design gives me that motivates me to stay on my passion for it.
SO HERE YOU GO A LITTLE KINGFISHER GIRL DRAWN IN THE NAME OF FUN

something about discovering crazy stuff.. i think i'm going to do this over again in a different style because it's lacking.. oomph. i could have also worked out the composition better :|

master copy study session with a buddy!
a quick one of Leighton's Roman Peasant Girl.

screenie work in progress as requested by said buddy. i start with some random farts of color and then work on the face because that's my favorite part, get frustrated with how Kristen Stewart it's looking, flip it to fix the features, drift to the clothing textures, flip it again to see how close to a human it's looking and work on it some more until i get hungry.

あの花 morning sketch.. i don't know, i'm not very satisfied with this one.

something about the fire

a concept i did for a mural class i'm taking currently. i do wish i had incorporated more graphical edgy styles into this, i somehow end up with really fluffy ideas most of the time. there were more sketches/thumbnail ideas, but i haven't gotten around to scanning them yet. edit: sketch thumbs are up! kinda crappy lol but that's what sketch thumbs are supposed to be right? 8D
from top to bottom: sketch, black and white, color, superimposed on the actual wall for visualization and presentation

anyways this was chosen (yay) so there'll be a massive wall with this on it! super excited to get around to actually painting it, i've never painted such a huge piece of concrete before and i'm a little squeamish about heights but i think it'll be fun!

旅立ち~西へ~

a submission for an exhibition my school's having.. each major only picks 10 pieces to show! i was scrambling to find something, but i didn't want to just hand up schoolwork - it's a personal thing i have about using school assignments to represent the stuff i draw.. i don't know, feels like it's not what i would want people to remember me by.
so anyways, this exhibition was a good excuse to finally get something personal done.. ah, the thrill of working on a tight deadline. as for how this started out, i honestly just wanted to draw a pair of jeans i bought recently. and cute monsters.

a friend asked me about my work process, so here's an animated gif - click on it to see it moooove. i know there's a huge chunk missing from step 1 to 2, but seriously it was just getting the motion and flow of the picture and then refining the lines, looking at weird animal photos for reference or ideas.. yeah lots of refining. i don't really have a fixed working method or whatever, it usually depends on the style of the image i'm trying to create.

a little something from Mel.. it's a sketchbook containing Joao Ruas's sketches! thank you Mel
\(*o*)\

doodle of my birthday outfit. i really really love those leggings, they make me look cooler than my usual dweeby self hahaha!

also, we got a little anonymous mention from one of our favorite photographers - zemotion! one of my lecturers had asked us how we came to know about the school we attend now, because it's kinda small and young compared to some of the other art institutions out there. and i remembered that it was because of one of her tweets mentioning her giving a talk at the school, which made me go check it out. we didn't know that we would eventually end up enrolling then, but we're here now! as fate would have it, our lecturer happened to be acquainted with her, and we were chatting and found out about how we were all linked. a little amusing, amazing and bizarre at the same time. if it weren't for that tweet, we would never have discovered the school and be here today. oh, the power of social media.

dead hearts

another wonderful trip to LA, this time to the Natural History Museum. pardon the stifled squeals in my head, it's just that THEY HAVE FREAKING DINOSAUR SKELETONS AAHH
and yes, of course, they are totally the reason why i went down. *____*

back to the Thinkspace Gallery, this time for Joao Ruas's show. found out about artist Andrea Offermann too, who had a beautiful exhibit of glass, oil, acrylic and other media.. i think. i remember the glass part.

hello, Gallery Nucleus. hello, Justin Sweet's work. hello, art of 3Kicks Studio.

and how was your weekend? mine was fanbloodytastic.
