so amazing and surreal to see the work of artists you ~~stalk~~ admire in real life, the feeling is just really different! i was first introduced to the delicate art of Audrey Kawasaki about 4 years ago, and i've been in love with her work ever since.. never thought i'd be able to see her gorgeous art up close, but there i was! Mari Inukai's whimsical pieces were another recent discovery as well - how can you not love those characters? being able to create figurines from my own designs someday would be so cool.

trying to go to as many exhibitions/galleries/museums as i can when i'm here, after all i don't know if i'll ever get chances like these again. the amount of exposure and experience is vastly different as compared to back in sg in the end.

come Nov, there's going to be an exhibition by Joao Ruas! unbelievably lucky to be in the vicinity of all these awesome shows by my favorite and fantastic artists. i feel so thankful *____*

noise on the train

so i was on the train today and i noticed the carriages were plastered with selected works submitted to the Noise Singapore 2011 Festival Showcase. there were some very cool stuff to see, but it was kinda hard to navigate my way up and down the train through the grumpy morning crowd, so i decided against it.

i had also submitted some of my work for the showcase, but as i couldnt see any sign of them from where i was gawking, figured that none of them made the cut.
big surprise on Facebook, when i was linked to the album and spotted this:

wow. this is just.. wow. i mean, seriously, wow.
this is the first time i've seen my work displayed in such a public location, and i felt so overwhelmed when i saw it. i am endeavoring to try to get a look in real life on the train before it gets taken down.
this is one of those times when you just feel so.. overcome.
this is when you realize that you want to create even more, to fill the world and inspire it, and just leave an impression on as many people as you can, even if it's just for a moment on a busy train.

decided to drop by the Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention 2010 last week with a friend. appeared pretty late to avoid the crowds, wandered around, bumped into friends and the like.

sketches acquired from the Imaginary Friends Studio booth, where they were providing sketch commissions at 5 bucks apiece.
not a bad deal if you ask me 8D
we asked for four in total, all Street Fighter characters. couldn't think of anything better on the spot, my mind kinda tends to freeze around awesomeness like them.. a pair of Yin and Yang sketches to split between us, and Sakura and Akuma for other people.

also took part in this lucky dip, had to go around obtaining the signatures from various artists present, for a chance to get random art goodies. our bounty was better than expected, we got a print and shirt from IFS!

Animation Nation 2010 is here again for the week. i missed Genius Party 2 at AN '09 last year, pretty sad. the films this time round seem to be more well-rounded internationally, as compared to the previous times where they were mostly Asian-dominated.

this is Production I.G.'s first 3d CG production. i loved the concept. it reminds me of a children's book i had when i was little (oh the irony).

also caught this in the same day. a Swedish sci-fi animation. the overall feel of the film left me feeling distinctly uncomfortable, maybe that was the point. the heavily stylized characters, almost morbid, the grim and post-apocalyptic setting, the somber tone with its underlying messages..

both films are definitely worth catching. just try not to watch them in the same day, it gave me some emotional turbulence haha.

was in the States for 9 weeks to intern at the MIT Gambit Lab, basically doing my part in making some cool stuff which will be up real soon!
just got back from a vacation in Hokkaido as well, breathtaking countryside scenery. and the ramen! *A*

i finally managed to get through The Sky Crawlers as well, forgive me Mamoru Oshii fans. i can't exactly appreciate slow-paced animations, haha. here's the opening sequence for The Sky Crawlers though. absolutely loved the music and backgrounds, maybe because i'm such a sucker for skyscapes.

finally got a chance to go down to the Pixar: 20 Years of Animation exhibition at the local Science Centre.
pretty amazing stuff, it's one thing seeing all these work in a published book, and another thing to actually see them on the scraps of paper or canvases they were originally created on.
and the Toy Story zoetrope! it's like magic! but actually science. haha.

October was spent in Beijing. which explains the lack of update for that month eh. :D
a bunch of us headed up to CUC [Communication University of China] to collab with their animation students to produce a short animated clip, approx. 1 min. of course, we being the epic ones, blew up over there. the first week spent sightseeing and soaking up culture, the second week discussing and developing our story concept, the third and fourth weeks spent machine-gunning production to make this work.

extra character design, done in like 5 min, haha. this little guy has the cutest walk ever. i'll upload the walk cycle someday.

this trip wouldn't have been possible without the help of the 2 lecturers with us, Mr Chris and Zihao. REALLY. SERIOUSLY. i think we would have kinda.. spontaneously combusted or something without their miraculous lifesaving abilities.
i think this is one of the best overseas trips i've ever been on, everything was great; the food was great, the people were great, the weather was AWESOME. we saw snow! wallowed in snow! built snowmen [lumps, more like]! had snowball fights!

..excuse me while i squeal in the corner for a bit.

of course, not like it was my first time experiencing snowfall, but it's really.. wow. i don't think it ever fails to amaze, especially if you've been living practically on the equator your whole life.
